Discover Why Muzan Despises Doma of the Twelve Kizuki in Demon Slayer

Muzan Kibutsuji from Demon Slayer has shown affection towards some of his demons, but it is evident that Doma (also known as Upper Rank Two) is not one of them.

Muzan Kibutsuji, the Progenitor of Demons in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, holds little love for his creations, although he has a few favorites among the Kizuki including Rui, Gyutaro, and Akaza. However, an official fanbook by the manga’s creator reveals that he doesn’t like the Upper Rank Two demon, Doma. Muzan has no qualms about eliminating demons he dislikes, even if they are part of the Kizuki. It’s unclear why Doma, who is not favored by Muzan, became Upper Rank Two and why Kibutsuji hasn’t killed him yet.

Doma, who is known as the bane of Akaza’s existence, manages to make enemies wherever he goes, despite being the most friendly and polite among all demons. Akaza particularly despises Upper Two because Doma joined the ranks later but quickly surpassed Akaza in both power and ranking, while Akaza is a founding member of the Kizuki. Even Kokushibo, the Upper Rank One, treats Doma as a subordinate who needs to be lectured, and Nakime bluntly rejected Doma’s proposal for a romantic meeting. Perhaps, it’s possible that Muzan finds Doma as annoying as everyone else.

When Muzan gathered the Upper Ranks after Gyutaro’s death, he expressed his anger and questioned why they had failed to eliminate the Demon Slayer Corps or find the Blue Spider Lily. Doma, who had recruited Gyutaro, offered to repent by gouging out his own eye but also admitted that he was not good at detective work and had never found the flower or Ubuyashiki. Despite being the third most powerful demon in the world, Doma’s incompetence was surprising, and even during the first gathering of the Upper Ranks in 113 years, he annoyed Akaza to the point of having parts of his head punched off — twice.

Muzan Kibutsuji is perceived as the type of person who would not hesitate to kill someone for the grave offense of being extremely annoying. However, it is peculiar that Doma, who runs a religious institution named the Eternal Paradise Faith where he devours his followers to grant them eternal life by becoming a part of him, is left unchecked. Doma’s preference for consuming women might have contributed to his rapid rise to power since he once stated that women are particularly nutritious for demons due to their ability to nourish babies with their bodies. Doma’s position as the Upper Rank Two of the Twelve Kizuki is the most likely reason why he is safe from Muzan’s murderous tendencies.

Muzan, at the conclusion of the “Swordsmith Village” arc in the manga, disclosed that his initial intention was not to create other demons. Rather, he created them with the hope that one of them would develop enough power to endure sunlight. This way, if he were to consume such a demon, he would attain the strength he needed to become the perfect being. The reason why Muzan refrained from killing Doma might be that he could not risk losing such a powerful demon. It is possible that Muzan believed that Doma could eventually become strong enough to survive sunlight, and killing him would contradict the primary reason for transforming him into a demon.

It’s probable that Muzan killed most of the Lower Ranks with the belief that they were not powerful enough to tolerate sunlight. However, Doma’s potential was too great, and killing him just for speaking too much would not be justified. After Nezuko became immune to sunlight, Doma was kept alive for the upcoming conflict with the Demon Slayer Corps. In this conflict, Doma succeeded in killing one of the Hashira named Shinobu Kocho, surpassing even Akaza’s performance. At the end of the day, Doma’s potential was deemed more important than his irritating personality, albeit barely.
