MHA: How Izuku Midoriya’s Animalistic Costume Design Could Have Troubling Implications

Season 6 of My Hero Academia reveals the fierce conflict between the Pro Heroes and the powerful Paranormal Liberation Front, and the heroes are being intensely tested. Numerous have been killed in battle, while others like Hawks and Best Jeanist have sustained long-lasting damage. On top of that, the protagonist Izuku Midoriya has been weighed down psychologically.

Izuku Midoriya has already accumulated wounds from his time as a budding hero, and now he wields complete control of One For All. His mental health is deteriorating due to the pressure, making his “Dark Deku” persona come out, which is accompanied by the absence of his signature enthusiastic grin like All Might’s. Additionally, his costume has become rather wild, indicating just how much the normally-happy Midoriya is enduring.

The battle attire and abilities of a Pro Hero in My Hero Academia can tell a lot about their approach to combat and identity. Hawks is a prime example of this, as the wear and tear on his wings demonstrate the intensity he puts into defeating the villains. Similarly, Endeavor has acquired scars from his battles. Midoriya’s costume has taken on a whole different meaning, showing his determination to take down the strongest villains. His attitudes have shifted from the analytical and team-oriented to a more feral, single-minded approach. This is further reflected in his costume, which displays the strain he is under as he pushes himself beyond his limits.

Deku appears to be convinced of his own abilities, yet his disheveled superhero attire paints another picture. His intense gaze is hidden beneath the hood, and his mask’s mouthguard has become rough-edged, resembling the teeth of a wild beast. Similarly, his white gloves terminate in pointed protrusions akin to claws, while the fabric and frayed edges of his costume could be likened to an animal’s fur. Plus, the appendages on his costume that were once designed to emulate All Might’s upright hair tufts, now appear to be more like an animal’s ears or perhaps horns.

Everyone is well aware of Deku’s obligation to battle and overcome Tomura Shigaraki to save the world, however his untamed side is causing him to be too focused on this task. He has become like an animal, unable to think rationally and simply chasing after villains out of instinct. It is now up to his companions to “domesticate” him and recover his rational thought. If they can manage this, then Deku can convey a better message by restoring his outfit before his next mission or even changing it for a brand new look.

Izuku Midoriya’s original costume, with its hood and ear-like appendages, made him look peculiar. Now, his current attire makes him seem more like a wild animal without a human face. It is clear that it is time to change back to something simpler and hood-free so that everyone can admire his smiling face as the new sign of tranquility.

Like other Shonen Heroes, Deku must learn to control his ferocious instincts

Like other Shonen Heroes, Deku must learn to control his ferocious instincts.

Other anime characters may rely on animal instincts and fighting styles, but what distinguishes Dark Deku from them in My Hero Academia is that his instincts are currently overpowering him, causing him to act in self-destructive ways. In contrast, these other heroes have a more balanced approach, using their instincts as a guide while still taking into account the importance of working together as a team. Midoriya, however, has been overworking himself in his effort to defeat Shigaraki, letting his instincts guide him and pushing away his teammates in the process.

In comparison to Inosuke Hashibira from Demon Slayer, who wears a boar head as a helmet and practices Beast Breathing, Izuku Midoriya in My Hero Academia must gain control of his more instinctive emotions in order to use his feral instincts alongside his rational mind. Inosuke, who was raised by wild animals, appears more beastly than Midoriya, however, he wisely utilizes his instincts as a tool, such as sensing creatures in a forest, and is an excellent contributor to the team. For Midoriya to achieve victory over his adversaries, he must blend his feral instincts with his rational human mind and fight in a heroic fashion.
