One Piece: Luffy’s Unequal Rivalry with Kid and Law – Who Will Emerge Victorious?

Despite the three-way rivalry between Monkey D. Luffy, Eustass Kid, and Trafalgar Law being set up as equal, it can come off as one-sided. The narrative displays them all as having comparable skills, such as the number of stones they can carry, how quickly they can destroy a ship, or how long they can go without dodging a fireball. Even their bounties coming out of Wano were all the same. Though these feats are not directly linked to strength, they are how the story conveys that they are meant to be perceived as evenly matched.

Despite being portrayed as equals, it’s hard to imagine that the trio of characters are as alike as Eiichiro Oda might have intended. The roles they have played so far in the One Piece storyline have made the purported equality between them appear to be more off-kilter than what was likely intended.

How Powerful Are Child, Law, and Luffy in Relation to Each Other?

How Powerful Are Child, Law, and Luffy in Relation to Each Other

At the beginning, it was unclear if any of the three had an edge over the others. Luffy used Haki to hurt Kaidō, while Kid and Law used their Devil Fruit Awakenings to damage Big Mom, so each had a unique approach to their opponents. This left a question as to how they would measure up if they were to go head-to-head.

Luffy has raised the bar with his latest Gear Five power-up, giving himself an edge over Kid and Law with his increased Haki control and Devil Fruit Awakening. To keep up with him, Kid and Law will need to put in some extra effort in their Haki training.

Luffy’s ability to defeat Kaidō single-handedly is certainly noteworthy. He was the only one strong enough to deliver the decisive blow, whereas Kid and Law were only able to overcome Big Mom by working together and achieving a ring out. This outcome can be seen as more impressive than the other.

The discrepancy in how Kid, Law, and Luffy deal with the mighty Emperors is a major issue why few people think that Kid and Law have any chance of defeating Shanks and Blackbeard. Even if they manage to put up a good fight, it is predicted that they will ultimately be unsuccessful. Similarly, if Luffy was to face these Emperors, it is presumed that he would suffer the same fate. Therefore, Luffy is not on the same level as Kid and Law yet.

What else could Child and Law get better at?

What else could Child and Law get better at?

Law might be the closest to rivaling Luffy in terms of admiration and respect. His actions in the Punk Hazard and Dressrosa arcs have won him many fans, and he has been featured in two One Piece films. In comparison, Kid’s roles have been comparatively minor. As a result, Luffy and Law appear to be the stronger duo, and Kid appears to be the weaker link in the trio.

It is difficult to assert that the Kid Pirates or the Heart Pirates are as well equipped as Luffy’s Straw Hat Pirates. Even if Kid and Law are as powerful as Luffy, this would not make much of a difference if they do not have skilled allies to join them in battle. Consequently, it is difficult to imagine any of these two crews being able to match up to the Straw Hats in one-on-one fights against the top members of an Emperor-level pirate crew.

The situation could be completely altered by the time Luffy, Kid, and Law reunite. It could even be different once the outcomes of Kid and Law’s duels with Shanks and Blackbeard are revealed. Both Kid and Law should work on improving their Haki and becoming more involved in the story. Doing so would make them more plausible rivals in the pursuit of One Piece.
