The Ox-King is known for his enormous size and wealth. He is also Goku’s father-in-law and his wealth explains why Chi-Chi constantly nags Goku about their living conditions. Despite Ox-King’s wealth, there is a debate on why Goku needs to work to support his family. The reason for this is because Ox-King is actually facing financial difficulties.
The wealthiest and largest member of Goku’s family
Ox-King is a huge man who was once a student under Master Roshi and first appeared in the original Dragon Ball series. Despite his intimidating size, he is actually a gentle and mild-mannered person. He is very attentive to his daughter and two grandsons, unlike Goku who was not as caring. This is mainly due to the fact that he has a lot of money and spoils his family. Chi-Chi grew up as royalty in a gigantic castle on Fire Mountain where he lived in luxury, although the surrounding fires were a constant source of annoyance for him.
It has been suggested many times that Ox-King’s wealth was the primary source of support for Goku’s family, particularly during periods when Goku passed away. This is because Gohan and Goten have a similar appetite to their father, which would have been challenging for the unemployed and widowed Chi-Chi to provide for on her own. It is likely that the king of Fire Mountain stepped in to support them. These financial contributions from family members were finally confirmed in Dragon Ball Super, which resolved years of speculation about Goku’s family’s financial status. With her father still playing a significant role in her life and doing many of the things that Goku should have done for the family, it is no surprise that Chi-Chi often became irritated with her husband. Goku had to get a job because Ox-King’s wealth had run out
By the start of Dragon Ball Super’s opening arc, the Ox-King’s situation is far from ideal. A new blaze erupts on Fire Mountain, causing the Ox-King to lose his riches and the resources in the nearby town. This setback forces him to put his attention on his own problems, making it impossible for him to sustain Chi-Chi and her household. Consequently, Chi-Chi compels Goku to find employment and provide for the family. Goku decides to cultivate a type of vegetable that shares a name with his deceased brother, Raditz.
