Witness the Future of Anime: Cowboy Bebop Director Unveils His New Masterpiece

The initial key visual for Cowboy Bebop Director – Shinichiro Watanabe‘s short film A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot has been released, which is one of two short films that will be screening at the Niigata International Animation Film Festival on March 17.

The other short film is Shuhei Morita’s Roots and both will be part of the TAISU project, a Chinese anthology animation project that intertwines several sci-fi stories with directors from Japan, China, and New Zealand. After the screenings, Watanabe and Morita will have a talk event discussing the films. Watanabe’s A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot was initially showcased at the 2022 Fantasia International Film Festival back in July.

MAPPA, the well-known studio behind such titles as Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan: The Final Season, and Jujutsu Kaisen, has released its first animated short film, A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot. Directed by Watanabe, the 20-minute movie follows a girl who has lost her memory, traveling in a world that has been taken over by automated technology, with no other humans around. During her search for other people, she meets a helpful robot who joins her on the quest. Eventually, they find a young boy determined to get his hands on the Crystal of Time, so he can reconnect with the past.

The acclaimed cast of A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot includes the legendary Kouichi Yamadera, who has voiced Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop and Beerus from Dragon Ball: Super, as The Robot. Misaki Kuno, renowned for her roles as Hawk in Seven Deadly Sins, Faputa in Made in Abyss Season 2 and Frederica Rosenfort in 86 Eighty-Six, takes on the role of The Girl. Completing the trio is Yuuma Uchida, well-known for voicing Megumi Fushigiro in Jujutsu Kaisen, Kyo Souma in Fruits Basket (2019) and Kawaki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, as The Boy.

This is Watanabe’s first short film since he directed Blade Runner Black Out 2022 in 2017. His other short films, Kid’s Story and A Detective Story were both parts of the anthology animated series The Animatrix, and he also directed Baby Blue in 2017. The celebrated director is well-known for iconic series like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy.

A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot has yet to be made available on any streaming services or in theaters.
