Despite being portrayed as timid and afraid, Usopp’s past accomplishments show that he has always been a courageous sailor.
The Straw Hat Pirates of One Piece may be a small group of ten, but they are all distinct and varied. Every one of them has a defining trait, as well as a unique ambition. For example, Nami is renowned for her thieving and persuasive aptitudes, and her ambition is to create a chart of the entire One Piece world. Usopp is the only one with a relatively modest dream – to become a heroic seafarer, like his father, and embark on daring voyages that he can later boast about. Despite how the anime portrays him, Usopp’s early accomplishments show that he has always had what it takes to accomplish his aspiration.
Even as a scaredy-cat, Usopp, like the other Straw Hat Pirates, has a special trait that sets him apart. His fearfulness doesn’t go away like it doesn’t matter how much courage he has attained. Yet, he doesn’t run away from danger. He wishes he could, but he still doesn’t back down even before he was trained by Heracles before the time skip.
Usopp Decided To Face A Whole Pirate Gang By Himself
From the moment Usopp appears in the series, it is quite clear what his character is meant to be – comic relief. He may not possess the same fighting abilities as Sanji, Zoro, and Luffy, but he is quite eloquent. Usopp has been deceiving Kaya, his childhood friend, with tales of his supposed exploits. Despite this, the other villagers also know him as a mischievous prevaricator since he routinely makes up stories of pirate attacks. Consequently, when a gang of villains actually attacks the village, none of them believe Usopp, not even Kaya.
Usopp is scorned and derided by the other villagers, yet he does not simply cower in fear. Instead, he decides to confront the Black Cat Pirates on his own. He intentionally misleads his ragtag band of followers, the Usopp Pirates, about the extent of the danger he is facing. Even if Luffy and the others are present, Usopp chooses to go without their assistance. His intention is not to defeat Captain Kuro and his minions; rather, he is cognizant of his own inadequacies and chooses to do it as a means of protecting Kaya and the villagers.
About his friends, he always comes through
Usopp is motivated by his crew mates, feeling a sense of pride and protectiveness towards them. During the Arlong Park Arc, the Straw Hats are at a disadvantage, with Zoro severely injured and Luffy in danger of drowning. Usopp is tempted to flee, but his loyalty to his friends leads him to turn back and challenge Choo, the smelt-whiting Fish-Man. He triumphs with his unconventional tactics, marking his first major victory in the series.
Although Usopp may tell lies, he genuinely has faith in his friends and their aspirations, no matter how lofty or seemingly impossible they may seem. Consequently, he won’t tolerate anyone who attempts to ridicule them for having such goals. In the early days of One Piece, such mocking was common, as the characters at that time were unfamiliar with the world’s wonders and riches. Nevertheless, that does not excuse the mockery. Mr. 4 and Ms. Merry Christmas of Baroque Works found this out the hard way.
He Places a High Value on his Convictions
Usopp may be seen as a carefree character, but when it comes to making decisions and standing up for what he believes in, he will not back down. During the Water 7 Arc, the Going Merry was deemed beyond repair, leaving the crew with the difficult decision of what to do next. Luffy suggested leaving the ship to rest in Water 7, but Usopp staunchly opposed the idea, determined to not abandon the vessel despite its condition, going so far as to fight against his friend.
Usopp’s choice to confront Luffy over the Going Merry was not one taken lightly. He was aware that his strength and capabilities were no match for Luffy’s, and his chances of winning were slim. However, this did not prevent him from taking action, as his convictions drove him to prepare for battle. He even used his knowledge of his former captain’s weaknesses to give himself an advantage. In the end, although Usopp lost the fight, his decision proved his strength of character and commitment to his own principles. It was a defining moment of his journey as a pirate, showing just how far he was willing to go to protect what he believed was right. Ultimately, his courage and determination served as a testament to his position as one of the bravest warriors of the sea in One Piece.
